Today, Lindsey and I had the privilege of conducting a blind taste test at Barnes and Noble. Our target consumer? Females in the 20-something age range like us (just like our interviews). We received permission to conduct our blind taste test and set up our table at 11:00am. Our goal was to sit through the prime lunch hours, 11am-1pm, in hopes of catching more “victims.” We brought Grape-flavored Propel and Grape-Blueberry Vitaminwater and small plastic cups. On the bottom of ten cups we put an ‘A’ and on the bottom of ten more cups we put ‘B.’ We set up two stations so two women could take the test simultaneously. Each station had a cup of Propel and a cup of Vitaminwater. After snagging the victim, we told them that each product was marketed as a healthy beverage. We asked them to sip each one and decide which a.)Tasted better, and which they thought would be b.)Was the healthier choice. Each answer was documented on a chart. After the women completed the brief test, we gave them the results. Cup A was Vitaminwater containing 33grams of sugar per bottle, and Cup B was Propel containing 0grams of sugar per bottle.
The first half hour was very successful. We had about five women agree to take our blind taste test. Although hesitant at first, I think they really enjoyed participating in our experiment. We had some great reactions when they found out the amount of sugar in the Vitaminwater compared to the Propel. Most were shocked to learn a “healthy beverage” like Vitaminwater would have so much sugar.
The last hour and a half we only had a sprinkling of women take our test, about seven altogether, giving us a total of twelve women. We even had a few people turn us down. The final results for tastiest beverage were split 50/50 for Vitaminwater and Propel. Interestingly, Vitaminwater won over Propel for the healthiest beverage, bringing in eight votes (66%) compared to Propel’s four (44%). Overall, it was a very successful taste test. Thank you to all who participated!
