French Creek
Bible Conference

My Second Home

Picture
I chose to use French Creek Bible Conference (located at French Creek State Park in Elverson PA) as my special place, for that exact reason, it’s special. I have a long history of French Creek Bible Conference in my family. My parents met at FCBC and I have been going with my family or on my own every summer since birth. My older sister started walking at French Creek. French Creek Bible conference is a Christian summer camp offered through the Orthodox Presbyterian Church ministry. Every summer French Creek State Park hosts 5 weeks of FCBC with each week sharing two different grade levels beginning with 4th grade and ending with 12th. There are many opportunities to serve at French Creek Bible Conference including: counselor, music coordinator, activities coordinator, nurse, and kitchen staff. I have been serving as counselor for 7/8th grade girls for nine years. One thing I have always loved about camp is that no matter how much the world changes or people change, FCBC remains the same. When things are chaotic in life, I have this wonderful place to turn to that never changes. Additionally, the peace sign symbol represents things I love: fellowship, God's Word, God's creation, and peace. This piece reflects special memories of a special place in my life that never changed even as I changed and grew from a camper to a camp counselor.

When the world around me is changing, I know a place that will always be the same. That place is French Creek Bible Conference. A place where the memories created will last for a lifetime. I love the calmness, the peace that emanates from every corner. I love when the golden sunbeams stream through the green-crowned trees and tickle my cheeks! I love the way the rugged messhall stands tall and proud as the focal point of my sweet escape. I love the old wooden tables that fill the messhall, and the metal chairs where the singing and messages take place. I love the way the intricate artwork of tiny eight-legged spiders decorates each rough corner. I love the way the porch stretches across the length of the messhall. I love how the gurgling, bubbling creek flows deep in the woods, the epitome of peace. I love the way the picnic tables, weathered and worn from the elements, dot the landscape. The rough wooden planks are carved and scarred from years of memories. I love the frayed volleyball net that flutters in the breeze calling for competition on its dirt court. I love the rugged yet picturesque cabins that span across the horizon and provide a week-long “home sweet home.” I love the chirp of cicadas and crickets on those sultry summer evenings. The sound is like peaceful music to my ears lulling me to sleep. I love the cool, crisp air of the early mornings when everything feels fresh and new. I love the way the dewdrops sparkle like tiny diamonds at my feet. I love the fire pit surrounded by a ring of rocks containing the ashy embers of charred firewood, the evidence of warm memories from the previous evening. I can still smell the burning wood from last night’s campfire. Oh how I love this place! Home is where my heart is, and French Creek Bible Conference is my home away from home!

Diary entries of a first-time camper
Dear Diary,
CAMP, CAMP, CAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's finally here!!!!!!!!!!!! I am soo excited to be here by myself! Some of the girls are already homesick! But not me! I love French Creek! I am in cabin 1-1-8. YES! So glad I am not in Unit 2! Its soo far away! My counselor is soooo cool! Her name is LeAnn and she is awesome! She brought this giant stuffed dog named Pete to sit on her bed! He is so cute! My cabin mates are nice! I am with Jessica, Kerri, and Katie. We all brought a lot of stuffed animals from home to decorate the cabins!! I am soo excited! I hope we win!

We got into our clans for the week tonight! The activities director announced that our team names would be bug names! We are the Praying Mantis! We made our poster! It looks cool! This guy, Steve, drew a huge Praying Mantis on the front of the poster, and I helped make the letters! Everyone thought they looked cool! We had our first class and the first music too! I love singing the praise songs at French Creek! My favorite part!

Alright its almost 11. Going to hang out with the girls for a few minutes before lights out! Oh and so far, no mice! Better keep the food put away!

Later gater,
Abby

Dear Diary,
Last night was scary! One of the girl counselors fainted or something and all of the girls were crowded into one cabin! We were all huddled together and scared because we didn't know what was going on! Camp nurse came up though.

Today was fun! Stayed around at camp during free time so I could play games and meet people! Played a lot of box hockey and tetherball as well as ping pong, and mafia! We also practiced the cup game!  **clap-clap-1-2-3-clap-move it over-clap-middle-bottom-top-top-slap-it-over!** We played in a round and it was awesome! I've got it down, but I don't think the kitchen staff is very excited when we borrow cups from the kitchen! Most of the time we use soda cans!

Later gater,
Abby

Dear Diary,
I decided to go swimming today with the girls! The Olympic size pool is soo much fun! It starts at 6 inches and goes to 6 feet! I love starting at the 6 inches and walking until I can't stand on the bottom anymore! We tried playing on the wheelchair ramp that leads into the water but the lifeguards didn't like that.

Letter Home to Parents

Dear Mom and Dad,
Camp is a lot of fun. I am having a blast! My counselor is really cool! Her name is LeAnn. I am in cabin     1-1-8 with LeAnn, Jessica, Kerri, and Katie. Our theme for the week is Creation! That should be fun! Oh yeah, we had my favorite meal for lunch yesterday! Hoagies, chips and bug juice of course! Guess what happened on the first night of camp? One of the girl counselors fainted! All of us girls were crowded into one cabin. We were sooo scared! The nurse came up to make sure she was ok. Its sad that something so big would happen on my first night here by myself! She is ok tho. Yesterday I went to the pool! I love swimming in the pool! It's so big! I made some new friends. Brittney, Kate, and Karen. They said they might go to the pool again today and I might go with them! My cabin looks cool! We all brought cute stuffed animals to decorate the cabin with! My clan is fun. We are all named after different bugs. We "the Praying Mantis!" Last night we were in first place! I hope we stay in first place and win the whole week! Then we can get free canteen! Well its time for clan chores! We have washhouses today! Yuck! Don't have too much fun without me! I miss you both so much!

Love you!
Abby

Dear God,
As I look around I can’t help but thank you for the beauty of your creation.
You are the ultimate Creator. Thank you for the many blessings you have given me, especially this place, this very special place in my life, French Creek.  I ask You to use me this week for Your will. Help me to be a positive example and role model in the lives of each of these young girls. Everything is confusing during the difficult middle school years. Give them the strength they need to get through each day and show them Your love.  Show me how to love each and every young girl I have the privilege of counseling this week. Help me to be an encouragement and a friend. I ask that you would watch over Jenna, Hannah K, Olivia, Bethany, and Hannah. Work in their hearts this week, and help them to turn to you for everything they need. Keep them safe and healthy and close to you. Open our ears and our hearts that we would grow closer to You through your Word that is preached and taught this week.  Give them the guidance and direction they need, and give me the words to say.

In Your  name, Amen

Diary Entries: As a Counselor

                                                                                                                                                           Day 1
Dear Diary:
This place continues to amaze me every day of every year I attend. When I look at the overflowing abundance of beauty that pours out of every tree branch and every particle of red dirt, I cannot help the overwhelming feeling of awe over the power of God in His creation. He is truly the best artist! What a mighty God I serve!

Speaking about serving, the kids come today! I am looking forward to meeting my girls: Bethany, Hannah, Olivia, Hannah, and Jenna. I can't wait to get to know each one of them! I pray that God will use me this week. I pray that God will give me the strength I need and the words to say to love and encourage each girl at such a vulnerable time in their young lives. I plan to talk to the girls tonight during cabin devotions and spend some time getting to know them! I made up girly gift bags for each girl!

Lord, help me be an example!

Until next time,
Abby

*Later.
The girls are so sweet! I can tell this will be a great week! Looking forward to a lot of fun and memories. I pray that this week will bring us all closer to our Savior!

Dinnertime! Counselors and staff are responsible for table setting tonight so we can show the kids how the kitchen staff likes it done right! Haha!

                                                                                                                                                           Day 2
Dear Diary,
The first set of praise and worship last night was so uplifting! One of my favorite times of the week, singing praise to my God! The message on the Promises of God, our theme for the week, was interesting and engaging. Looking forward to learning so much this week!

Devotions went ok last night. I think the girls were feeling a little shy on the first night! It's ok! I wasn't expecting them to open up to me right away anyway! Praying that God will open their hearts! I did get to know them a little! What a fun group of girls! So silly! This will be a great week!

I woke up early and as I walked to the Washhouse, I caught some sunbeams peeking through the trees! They were so close, I could almost feel them tickling my cheeks! Wish I had thought to bring my camera! Oh well! Another day! It's chilly this morning, just the way I like it! Thank you God for this day! It's promising to be a good one out there!

Girls are still sleeping! Worn out already! Its only the first full day!  Love it! As soon as that horn blows the notes for Reveille, I'm sure they will jump right out of bed! Haha! For now, I am enjoying the peace! We can get this cabin cleaned and decorated before I leave for my staff meeting! First day of cabin scores! It's superhero week! My clan, the Lexanites(Lexanites-haha who names a superhero team after the enemy? LOL), should be a contender for that free canteen at the end of the week! Haha! I know the girls would love a win!

Staff meeting!

Until next time,
Abby

*Later.
The first full day was a success! Good day and already so many memories being made. It is fun to watch the slightly awkward scene where all of the kids are trying to meet people, but I saw my girls making new friends and I am meeting a lot of fun kids! We learned about God's promise to never leave us. One of my girls approached me to share how a close friend stabbed her in the back at school. She was deeply hurt about the situation. We talked for awhile about the love of Jesus and His promise to never leave us, and because of that, Jesus is the best friend anyone could ever have. We looked up some verses that she could memorize. It touched my heart to be able to provide some comfort for her! I love that the girls are starting to feel comfortable with me, enough to share what is on their hearts!

Took the girls swimming today, and we had a great time!

Btw, go Lexanites! First place today! Maybe it DOES work to be named after the enemy!

The girls are sleepy, time for bed! I know I better get as much sleep as I can because this sleepyness won't last! Once the girls start meeting more people and doing more things, they will be up all night telling stories and laughing! This counselor needs her sleep! ***zZzZz***
